The Flame Haired Solstice Dreamer

Cold winter brings the Everfrost and jewels every tree
In a forest new as birth and old as old can be
A flame~haired dreamer wanders there and shelters from the wind
And spins her dreams around the trees to break the ties that bind
She takes her thread and spins anew and how the Greenwood smiles
As she spins a spell for freedom and for her spirit Wylde

The dreamer finds an ancient oak and shelters in his lee
In a forest new as birth and old as old can be
Tis summer now and birdsong weaves its magick through her spells
And humming bees drum drowsily in the foxglove's bells
The dreamer sits beneath the oak with yarn upon her knee
And spins and knits and weaves her dreams and sets her spirit free

Hopi Prophecy

~free spirits camp~

...so we drove across east hampshire ('hamsher' if, like me, you are a hampshireite!) to the boarder of hampshire and west sussex, finally arriving in a small field behind a pub in liss.

for the previous week the weather forecasters had been saying there was going to be a heatwave and i have to say i was not convinced although we woke up on the friday to unseasonably warm weather.

once on site we set up our little awning in a late afternoon heatwave.

the next morning more cars, tents and campers started to arrive...

we started to watch the temperature rise...

and rise...

and rise even more...

...when it hit 116 degree's i was to hot to move let alone take another picture of the figures!

going to watch the re-enactment i sheltered under a large umbrella...

we kept flynts 'house' well into the shade and luckily i had a 12v fan that i would run for short periods when the heat really did get too much...

it started to cool down when the sun went behind the line of tree's, around 5pm...

some change of clothes later for some and it was time for the dolmen and six string jack to play and tell tales of pirates...and even put people in the stocks in order to sing happy birthday...

robyns bunting...

then it was time to travel home...people not of hampshire often think of it as a flat part of the country~nothing is further from the truth. it is a land of rolling hills split through with the huge chalk dragons back known as the southern england chalk formation

i feel closest to portsmouth when i can see and smell the sea~its those sea fairing ancestors of mine again stirring my blood...

this is 'up the hill', or rather portsdown hill showing the chalk underneath...my aunt still lives in the shadow of the chalk.
as children we would spend summers with her and we would drag cardboard boxes up as high as our legs would carry us on the grassy area to the right of the chalk face, then climb in the boxes and launch ourselves down again.

my mum still remembers being taken up there into the portsdown tunnels during the air raids in world war 2

the last time i travelled across the full length at the top of the hill was when we took my beloved nan on her last journey, through old portsmouth and up the hill.

it was such a wonderful weekend and a great way to spend an indian summer.

now i am sitting at my desk, with a lamp on at five in the afternoon, the sky is grey and a wind is stripping the leaves from the giant oak and the only spark of colour is the yellow black eyed susan still twining its way up my nook.

samhain is knocking on the door...

It looks like you had a lovely time! The weather was so lovely and so unexpected, but I don't think it got quite so hot down here... Such beautiful countryside as well, thank you for sharing your pictures.

All things share the same breath~the beast, the tree, the man, the air shares its spirit with all the life it supports.
